At the centre of every bike wheel is the hub — a small yet powerful component that determines how smoothly your bike rolls. Hubs connect the spokes, axle, and drivetrain, serving as the wheel’s rotational core. When paired with hub end caps, they ensure precise alignment, efficient power transfer, and long-lasting durability across road, gravel, and mountain bikes.
A bicycle hub includes a shell, flanges for spoke attachment, bearings, and an axle. The shell — typically made from aluminium alloy — provides strength without excessive weight. High-performance builds may use carbon fibre or titanium for reduced mass and improved responsiveness.
Rear hubs also feature a freehub body, where bike cassettes attach, allowing coasting when you stop pedalling. Front hubs, meanwhile, prioritise low rolling resistance and stability.
There are two main types of hubs: front and rear, each tailored for specific purposes.
When choosing a hub, it’s essential to match it with your brake type and axle system:
Bearings sit at the heart of every hub, directly affecting rolling smoothness and lifespan. Most modern hubs use:
Some high-end hubs use ceramic bearings for even less friction and greater durability, ideal for riders seeking maximum efficiency.
End caps (also called hub adapters) fit on both sides of the hub and are essential for compatibility. They adapt hubs to fit different axle standards, letting one hub design work across multiple setups — from quick release skewers to thru-axles.
Beyond fitment, end caps protect hub bearings from dirt and moisture, support secure clamping, and maintain correct bearing preload. Swappable end caps are particularly useful as bike designs evolve, allowing upgrades without replacing entire wheelsets.
Selecting the correct hub setup means ensuring compatibility with your wheel hubs, bike wheels, disc brakes, and drivetrain. For rear hubs, confirm that the freehub body matches your cassette standard (Shimano, SRAM, or Campagnolo). Convertible hub systems — with interchangeable end caps — are a practical choice, offering flexibility as standards change.
Regular hub maintenance keeps your wheels spinning freely. Check for bearing play or roughness, re-grease loose bearings as needed, and replace worn cartridge bearings. Keep end caps secure and lightly greased to prevent corrosion and ensure easy removal. This simple care extends the lifespan of your bike components and maintains optimal performance.
Upgrading your hubs can yield noticeable gains in speed, handling, and durability:
For performance-focused cyclists, investing in premium hubs is one of the most effective ways to improve overall ride quality and efficiency.
Though often overlooked, bicycle hubs and end caps are the unsung heroes behind smooth, consistent performance. Whether you ride MTB, road, or gravel, upgrading these key components ensures better control, reduced wear, and enhanced reliability on every journey.
Mountain bikes are available in multiple different styles to take on any style of trail you choose.
